| biography:
| Vibraphone player, born in Detroit, Michigan, USA. He learned the guitar and piano while at school, taking up xylophone and vibraphone in his teens. He was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1945, which led to his emergence as the most important vibraphone player of the bebop era. In 1952 he was, with John Lewis, a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, which existed until 1974 and re-formed in the 1980s. Jackson's lyrical interpretations, particularly of ballads, kept him in the forefront of jazz through periods of stylistic change. |
