| Golfer, born in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. He won the 1969 Open at Royal Lytham (the first British winner for 18 years), and in 1970 won the US Open at Hazeltine, MN (the first British winner for 50 years). He turned professional in 1962, and won the Jacksonville Open in 1968, the first Briton to win on the US Tour. A former Ryder Cup player (1967–80), he was appointed non-playing captain of the European team in (1983–9), and is now director of golf at the San Roque club. He retired from the professional tournament circuit in 1999, and was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002. |
