| Editor and writer, born near Moberly, Missouri, USA. After working as a migrant labourer in the 1920s, he began writing for magazines about Depression-era unemployment. In 1933 he published the semi-autobiographical book, The Disinherited (1933), which remains a classic proletarian novel. He was founding editor of the leftist journals, The Anvil (1933–7) and The New Anvil (1939–41), and senior associate editor of the New Standard Encyclopedia (Chicago, 1947–66). |
