| Physicist, born in Germany. He studied theoretical physics at the University of Göttingen (1952), and after research work in Germany and the USA joined the University of California, Santa Barbara (1976). In 2000 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for his groundbreaking work in the development of semiconductor heterostructures. |
