| biography:
| Electrical engineer, born in Jefferson City, Missouri, USA. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin. His early work included the development of thick film hybrid circuits and compatible transistors (1947–58). Working for Texas Instruments (1958–70), he invented the monolithic integrated circuit (1958) and later the first hand-held calculator. In 1970 he became an independent inventor and consultant. In 2000 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for his invention of the integrated circuit. |
