| biography:
| Thief, born in London, UK. Brought up in a workhouse, his father having died, he became involved with prostitutes and thieves, and turned to petty crime. The subject of numerous ballads and popular plays, he was imprisoned four times, and made four spectacular escapes, even when manacled to the floor of his cell in solitary confinement. After his fifth arrest and imprisonment he was hanged at Tyburn, reputedly before a gathering of 200 000 people. |
