| Film actor, script-writer, and director, born in Neptune, New Jersey, USA. An office boy at MGM, he worked with the Players Ring Theater before making his film debut in 1958. A supporting role in Easy Rider (1969) brought him belated critical recognition. His intense charisma and acute sense of humour have illuminated a wide range of characters in such diverse films as Chinatown (1974), The Shining (1980), and Prizzi's Honor (1985). He has also written scripts, and occasionally directs. Nominated many times for an Academy Award, he won Oscars for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Terms of Endearment (1983), and As Good As It Gets (1997). Other film credits include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Batman (1989), The Two Jakes (1990), Wolf (1994), Mars Attacks! (1996), and About Schmidt (2002, Golden Globe; Oscar nomination). |
