| Playwright, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He studied at Sheffield University, joined Granada Television in 1956, and made his professional writing debut with 150 episodes of Coronation Street (1961–9). He created the series The Lovers! (1970), followed by individual plays such as The Evacuees (1975), Barmitzvah Boy (1976), The Knowledge (1979), Day to Remember (1986), Sleeping Sickness (1991), and Eskimo Day (1996). His film scripts include Lucky Star (1980) and Yentl (1983, in collaboration with Barbra Streisand), and his stage work includes Smash! (1981) and Our Gracie (1983). In 1973 he married the actress Maureen Lipman. |
