| biography:
| Tennis player, born in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. He won a number of important titles during the early 1940s, and turned professional after winning the Wimbledon singles title in 1947. Arthritis impeded his career, and he later became a successful promoter and television commentator. He was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1968. Open tennis began the same year, and he was instrumental in setting up the Grand Prix series and the Masters Championship. He played a major role in establishing the Association of Tennis Professionals, and was its first director (1972). |
