| US soldier and public official, born in Little Cedar Lick, Tennessee, USA. As a captain in the Texas Rangers, he reputedly introduced Samuel Colt's revolving pistol - the six-shooter - to the frontier. He moved to California (1849) and served as the sheriff of San Francisco. He also had large real estate and banking interests in Oakland. |
