| Seismologist, born in Massillon, Ohio, USA. He was an adviser to the president (1958–9) and the US Air Force (1960–9), a member of the Atomic Energy Commission (1969–74), and the Irving Porter Church Professor of Engineering at Cornell University (1971). His seismic profiles of the E USA have supported his conviction that seismology is the key to obtaining new data on the earth's continental crust. |
