| Playwright, born in Madrid, Spain. He intended to enter the legal profession, but turned to literature. After publishing some poems and short stories he won recognition as a playwright, writing over 150 plays, including several brilliantly satirical society comedies. His masterpiece is Los intereses creados (1907, trans The Bonds of Interest), an allegorical play in the commedia dell'arte style. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. |
