| biography:
| Playwright and poet, born in Valencia, E Spain. He assumed the duties of theatre director on the death of his father, Alonso. His poetry appeared in La coxquilla del gusto (1629) and Tropezón de la risa (c.1636), miscellanies of fables, ballads, and festive poetry. His plays (banned in 1646 and permitted again in 1650) included La Virgen de los desamparados, El sitio de Tortosa, and Santo Tomás de Villanueva. His work is described at some length in Henri Mérimée's Spectacles et comédiens à Valencia (1913). His La Magdalena may have been the Santa María Magdalena reported to have been the first play to be performed after the reopening of the Madrid theatres in 1650. |
