| biography:
| Short-story writer, born in Schiedam, W Netherlands. In 1971 he published his first work In de bovenkooi (In the Upper Bunk), which was an instant success. Since then, and including his collection of stories Het wonder (1995, The Miracle), his work can be typified as autobiographical set against a strangely deformed reality coloured by bizarre occurrences and an outlandish fantasy, and with underdogs as the main characters. Recurring themes are his strict Calvinist upbringing, his detention in mental hospitals, the motherly, protective role of his wife Eva, and a romantic longing for paradise. In 1988 he was assigned to write the Book Week Gift. |
