| biography:
| Novelist and poet, born in Sint-Pancras, W Netherlands. From 1958 until 1974 he worked as an editor for the literary magazine Barbarber, which he co-founded. In the spirit of Barbarber he used collage techniques and ‘ready-mades’ as an alternative means to observe reality. After 1970 his work becomes less experimental, and his fascination with the human mind is apparent. His breakthrough as a novelist came with Hersenschimmen (1984, Out of Mind) in which the process of dementia is described from the consciousness of an old man. For his next novel, Publiek geheim (1987, Public Secret), he received the AKO literature prize, and in 1994 he was awarded the P C Hooft-prijs for his collected poetry. |
