| Mathematician, born in Krasnye Okny, Moldova. He studied in Moscow, where he became professor in 1943. The leader of an important school of Soviet mathematicians, he has worked mainly in Banach algebras, the representation theory of Lie groups, which is important in quantum mechanics, and in generalized functions, used in solving the differential equations that arise in mathematical physics. |
