| Literary critic and scholar, who pioneered the detailed critical study of literary texts in the 20th-c, born in Sandbach, Cheshire, NWC England, UK. With C K Ogden he wrote The Meaning of Meaning in 1923. His later books include the influential Principles of Literary Criticism (1924) and Practical Criticism (1929). During the 1930s he helped to develop Basic English, worked in China (1929–30, 1936–8), and became professor of English at Harvard (1944), where his publications included poetry as well as critical essays. |
