| Diplomat and writer, born near Travnik, C Bosnia and Herzegovina (formerly in Yugoslavia). A member of the diplomatic service, he was minister in Berlin at the outbreak of war in 1939. His chief works (trans titles), The Bridge on the Drina (1945) and Bosnian Story (1945), earned him the 1961 Nobel Prize for Literature and the nickname ‘the Yugoslav Tolstoy’. |
