| biography:
| Italian politician, born in Cremona, Lombardy, N Italy. He was one of the founders of the Italian Socialist Party in 1892, and led the reformist faction that advocated participation in the government. In 1912 he was expelled from the party for his support of the Libyan venture. He was in favour of Italian intervention in World War 1, and was a minister in 1916–18. He retired from politics in 1918 because of opposition to his views that the new frontiers to be drawn should be in accordance with the principles of the League of Nations. |
