| Soviet military commander and marshal of the Soviet Union (1944), born in Lodeyno, Russia. He was drafted into the Tsarist army in 1916, and joined the Red Army in 1918. During World War 2 he commanded several different fronts against the Germans. He then became commander-in-chief, ground forces (1946–50), first deputy minister of defence, and commander-in-chief of the Warsaw Pact forces (1956–60). |
