| Sculptor, born in Vrpolje, Slavonia, E Croatia. Apprenticed to a marble-cutter, he eventually studied in Vienna and Paris, where he became a friend of Rodin. He designed the national temple at Kosovo (1907–12) and the colossal Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Belgrade (1934). He lived in England during World War 2, and executed many portrait busts, including that of Sir Thomas Beecham. After the war he emigrated to the USA, becoming a US citizen in 1954, and professor of fine arts at Notre Dame University in 1955. |
