| Writer, born in Voronezh, W Russia. He worked as a journalist and clerk, writing lyrics and novels of the decay of the Russian nobility and of peasant life. His best-known work is Gospodin iz San-Francisco (1922, The Gentleman from San Francisco). He was the first Russian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (1933). After the Revolution, he lived in Paris. |
