| Israeli statesman and president (1952–63), born in Poltava, EC Ukraine. Having migrated to Palestine in 1907 he became a prominent Zionist, and in 1920 helped create the Histadrut, The General Federation of Labour. He signed Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948, and was elected president of Israel on the death of Weizmann in 1952. A prominent scholar and archaeologist, he wrote on Jewish and Zionist history. |
