| biography:
| Queen of Spain (1833–68), born in Madrid, Spain, the daughter of Ferdinand VII and his fourth wife, Maria Christina. Under the regency of her mother, she succeeded to the throne at the death of her father (1833), thus setting aside the rule of Salic Law. Her troubled reign was marked by intrigues, party conflicts, and civil strife. An insurrection in favour of her uncle, Don Carlos, was defeated in 1839, and she was finally deposed after frequent rebellions culminated in the revolution of 1868. She fled to France and in 1870 abdicated in favour of her son, Alfonso XII. |
