| Translator, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She spent 10 years learning every Germanic and Romance language before starting her career (1886) as a translator, essayist, and reviewer. From her voluminous output she is best remembered for her many translations of Russian masterpieces, particularly Turgenev's novels and stories (16 vols, 1905). |
