| Novelist, born in Lima, Peru, the niece and god-daughter of Salvador Allende, the former president of Chile. Several months after his assassination and the overthrow of Chile's coalition government in 1973, she fled Chile, seeking sanctuary in Venezuela. Her first novel, The House of the Spirits (1985), which arose directly out of her exile, became a worldwide best-seller and critical success. Her later books include Of Love and Shadows (1987), The Infinite Plan (1993), and Daughter of Fortune (1999). Among her novels for children is City of the Beasts (2002). Allende's work is written in the style of magic realism, which uses fantasy and myth to override time and place. |
