| Dutch naval officer, the son of an upper-class family in Nijmegen, E Netherlands. He went to Brazil (1641–5) as a clerk and notary. Imprisoned by the Portuguese and transported to Lisbon, he later escaped and returned to The Netherlands. He first sailed as a merchant, but joined the States' navy in 1649. He was vice-admiral in 1666, with distinguished service in the Four Days' Battle (Vierdaagse Zeeslag), and in the Baltic. He also served in the second Anglo-Dutch War on the Chatham expedition, and in the Battle at Sole Bay, and was killed in the Battle of Kijkduin. |
