| Composer and pianist, born in Camprodón, NE Spain. His early studies in music were completed in Barcelona and Madrid, and while still a child he made a concert tour of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the USA, which he was to repeat later (1883). He perfected his technique with Gevaert, Dupont, and Liszt. Encouraged by Felipe Pedrell he focused on composing, to which he owed his successes as a soloist. His markedly impressionist style of music, typically Spanish in its construction, varied and rich in styles and tones, emphasizes his piano compositions: Cantos de España, Suite española, Recuerdos de viaje, Caprichos andaluces, Rapsodia española, and Iberia (his final work consisting of 12 pieces). He also wrote three operas (Henry Clifford, Pepita Jiménez, Rey Arturo) and some orchestral works, among which the symphonic poem Catalonia is outstanding. |
