| Merchant and Loyalist, born at Raritan Landing, New Jersey, USA. A successful New York City merchant, he was a moderate in the First Continental Congress (1774–5). He co-operated with the British occupation forces (1776–83) and his property was confiscated by patriots (1779). A founder of the New York Chamber of Commerce, he moved to England in 1783. |
