| biography:
| Dutch lawyer and anti-revolutionary politician, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. After studying law and theology at the Free University of Amsterdam, he became successively professor there (from 1945) and Rector Magnificus (1960–1, 1972–6). As a politician he was member of the Upper House of parliament (1952, 1971–81) and minister of education (1965–7). He chaired the Education Council (1969–86) and the Interchurch Contact with Government Affairs (1970–89). He was also a prolific writer. |
