| biography:
| Editor and educator, born in New York City, New York, USA. The son of Jewish immigrants, he graduated from the City College of New York in 1940, became active in left-wing political circles, and saw combat with the US Army in France (1944–5). Gradually moving to the right, he edited Encounter magazine (1953–8) and The Public Interest magazine (from 1965). He taught social sciences at New York University (1969–88), and his Reflections of A Neoconservative appeared in 1983. |
