| Art historian, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA, the husband of Marilyn Lavin. He studied at Cambridge, UK (1948–9), Washington University, St Louis (1949 BA), New York University (1952 MA), and Harvard (1955 PhD). He taught at several institutions, notably at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1973), and specialized in ancient art, and Renaissance and Baroque sculpture. |
