| Rabbi and educator, born in New York City, New York, USA. A Harvard graduate, he earned a PhD there in 1960. He was the rabbi of the Riverdale Jewish Center, New York (1965–72). He taught history and Jewish studies at Brandeis University, Yeshiva University, and at the City University of New York (1972–9), and in 1979 became president of CLAL (the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership) in New York. |
