| biography:
| The second daughter of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands, born in Soestdijk, WC The Netherlands. She became a Catholic and married Charles Hugo, Prince of Bourbon Parma, in 1964 without officially asking the government for permission, so that she forfeited her rights to the throne. Her conversion and marriage were unpopular in Protestant circles. The couple divorced in 1981 and have four children: Carlos Javier Bernardo (1970), twins Jaime Bernardo and Margarita Maria Beatriz (1972), and Maria Carolina Chistina (1974). She has published books on the problems of women in society and on environmental issues. In World War 2 the Dutch troops raised in England from those who had escaped from The Netherlands were formed into the Princess Irene Brigade, which took part in the liberation of The Netherlands. |
