| biography:
| Athlete, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. She established herself at the 1964 Olympics with a silver medal in the long jump, and a gold in Poland's relay squad. She set world records at 100 m and 200 m in 1965, won three gold medals at the European Championships in 1966, and took the Olympic 200 m title in 1968 in world record time. She later won bronze medals at the 1971 European Championships and the 1972 Olympics. She then stepped up to 400 m, and in 1976 won the Olympic title in a new world record 49·28 sec. She appeared in her fifth Olympics at Moscow in 1980. |
