| Pima war hero, born in Sacaton, Arizona, USA. He was one of five marines photographed raising the US flag on Mt Suribachi, Iwo Jima in 1945. Unable to deal with the adulation that followed the photograph's wide publication, he returned to the reservation, where he died of alcoholism and exposure. |
