| biography:
| Pope, born in Genoa, Liguria, NW Italy. He succeeded Celestino IV in 1243 and clashed with Emperor Frederick II, excommunicating him at the council of Lyon in 1245. He opposed Frederick's son Conrad IV, King of Germany, but when he died (1254), he took his son Corradino of Swabia under his protection. He died just before confronting Manfredi, regent of Sicily. |
