| Writer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She was educated as a speech therapist and elocutionist. In her early work, beginning with Ontmoeting met de andere (1949, Meeting with the Other Person), the influence of Couperus and Van Schendel is detectable. She became popular with her novel Vroeger is dood (1976, The Past has Died) about the death of her parents affected by senility. She is praised for her sharp psychological insights and the way in which she exposes and analyzes the inner feelings of her characters. In addition to novels, she writes travel stories and theatre plays. |
