| biography:
| Physical chemist, born in Moscow, Russia. He moved to Belgium at the age of 12, studied in Brussels, and became a professor there in 1951. He was also founder-director of the Center for Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics at Texas (1967). For his contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1977. His popular books include Order out of Chaos (1979) and From Being to Becoming (1980). |
