| Physicist, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He studied at Moscow State University, and was appointed professor of physics there (1944), after working for four years at the State Optical Institute. He shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physics with Pavel Čerenkov and Igor Tamm for the discovery and explanation, in the 1930s, of the Čerenkov effect in which light is emitted by fast charged particles passing through matter. |
