| Biologist, born in Ivanovka, Ukraine. He became professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at Odessa (1870), and in 1888 joined Pasteur in Paris. He shared the 1908 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on immunology, in which he discovered the cells (phagocytes) which devour infective organisms. |
