| biography:
| Physicist, born in Sim, W Russia. He graduated from the Crimean University in Simferopol and went to the Physico-Technical Institute, Leningrad (St Petersburg) where he became director of nuclear physics (1938). He carried out important studies of neutron reactions, and was the leading figure in the building of Russia's first atomic (1949) and thermonuclear (1953) bombs, and the world's first industrial nuclear power plant (1954). He became a member of the Supreme Soviet in 1949. |
