| Dancer, choreographer, and ballet director, born in Kiev, Ukraine. He studied privately and at the Bolshoi Ballet School, graduating in 1924 into the main company, where he remained, as character soloist and choreographer, until 1939. He accepted the directorship of the new dance department of the Moscow Theatre for Folk Art in 1936, and formed a professional folk dance company the following year, developing simple steps and primitive patterns into full theatrical expression. This ensemble has since toured the world, amassing a vast repertoire of dances from other nations. As a choreographer, he is best known for creating scenes from daily life and genre pieces. In 1967 he founded the State Ensemble of Classical Ballet. |
