| biography:
| Reform journalist, born in Erie Co, Pennsylvania, USA. She was associate editor of The Chautauquan (1883–91), studied at the Sorbonne (1891–4), and joined McClure's Magazine (1894–1906). Her History of the Standard Oil Company (1904) established the place of women in the new ‘muckraking’ journalism. She also wrote biographies and feminist works, and helped run the American magazine (1906–15), campaigning against corruption and big business interests. Her history, The Nationalizing of Business (1936), became a standard work. |
