| Poet, born in Gorinchem, SC Netherlands. As a classical poet, she acquired her own distinct place in Dutch literature independently of any movement. At the Erasmiaans Gymnasium (secondary school) she was educated by Leopold, who greatly influenced her poetry. Her first collection, Kosmos (1940), clearly reveals her classical influence. In her traditional poetry she is looking to reflect the cosmic, metaphysical order of things. The literary heritage echoes throughout her work, and although initially underestimated due to its traditional character in a time of poetic revolt instigated by the Movement of Fifty, her work received more acclaim in the 1970s. In addition, she also translated works of Virgil. |
