| Actress and director, born in London, UK, the daughter of popular comedian Stanley Lupino (1893–1942). She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and made her film debut in Her First Affair (1932). She moved to Hollywood in 1933, and made several films for Warner Brothers, notably High Sierra (1941), Ladies in Retirement (1941), and The Hard Way (1942), for which she was voted best actress by the New York film critics. She later formed her own film company, and worked increasingly as a director of motion pictures and for television. |
