| biography:
| Greek poet from Rhegium in Italy. He lived at the court of Polycrates, tyrant of Samos, and wrote choral lyrics. Legend has it that he was slain by robbers near Corinth, and as he was dying he called upon a flock of cranes to avenge him. The cranes then hovered over the theatre at Corinth, and one of the murderers exclaimed, ‘Behold the avengers of Ibycus!’ This led to their conviction. The story is told in Schiller's ballad, Die Kraniche des Ibykos. |
