| biography:
| Physician to the Almohad ruler Yusuf, born in Cádiz, SW Spain. His fame rests mainly on his revision of Avicenna's philosophical romance Hayy ibn Yaqzan (Alive, Son of Awake), a work of pantheistic mysticism which traces the hero's intellectual development, on a desert island, from ignorance to wisdom. His philosophy influenced Ramon Llull, but it is doubtful whether it was directly known to Gracián, whose Criticón employs a similar theme. |
