| Traveller and writer, born in Tangiers, N Morocco. He spent 30 years (1325–54) in travel, covering over 120 000 km (75 000 mi), to all the Muslim countries, visiting Mecca, Persia, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, Bokhara, S Spain, Timbuktu, India, China, and Sumatra. He then settled in Fez, and dictated the entertaining history of his journeys: Ri&hdotbelow;läh (Travels, published in a French translation 1853–8). |
