| Anglican bishop, and philosopher of religion, born in Kearsley, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He taught at Cambridge from 1941, became a professor at Oxford (1951), and was appointed Bishop of Durham (1966). He was respected both as a diocesan bishop and for his intellectual contribution to the Church of England's Board for Social Responsibility, Doctrine Commission, and the committee on religious education that produced The Fourth R (1970). His philosophical works include Models and Mystery (1964) and Models for Divine Activity (1973). |
